Preparation
- Know your goals. Do you
want to sell products, promote your business, gain sales contacts?
- Plan for your audience.
Who is it that you're targeting with your trade show display?
- Send promotional emails or
direct mail to your current customers to increase traffic at your booth.
- Prepare for questions
about your business and services. Be prepared to do business.
- Visit other expos and
trade shows to see what other vendors are doing.
Designing Your Booth
- Plan ahead. Map out your
8x10-foot booth space in advance. Bring a supply box the day of the expo
with scissors, tape, etc. (Booth colors will be silver and blue. Sample
layout pictured)
- Keep it simple. The best
way to stand out is with strong but simple images and little text. Save the
details for product literature you hand out.
- Seconds matter. Your
company will have only a few seconds to catch the attention of a show
attendee. Make sure your booth is designed to create a single focal point
using easy to read text with clean simple graphics so visitors will
understand your message quickly and correctly.
- Think visibility. Use a
display board to hang some of your products at customer eye-level to draw
them into your display.
- Be inviting. Create a
booth that makes visitors feel comfortable. Make it easy for visitors to
enter your space and obtain information.
- Draw in the crowd. Use an
interactive display, such as a quiz or game on a computer, a contest or
drawing, a scheduled demonstration, etc. A prize drawing or contest is a
great way to collect contact information from booth visitors.
- Giveaways. Have a stock of
promotion items that you can use as giveaways at your booth, small items
that people can take away and use best. Be sure you place these items in a
location where people will have to walk into or through your display to get
them. A supply of candy can always grab peoples' eyes. Once their eyes bring
them to your booth, their ears are all yours.
- Promotional handouts. Make
sure you have plenty of promotional literature on hand. Use basic one-sheets
or even postcards as a general handout — give them to anyone who makes eye
contact with you. Keep a stack of more high-quality promotional materials in
reserve, and hand those out only to prospects who display significant
interest.
During the Show
- Stay focused. Don't try to
explain everything about your company in the first conversation. Quickly
introduce your main selling point and encourage the prospect to sign a
mailing list.
- Stay friendly. Make sure
everyone working in your booth has a pleasant demeanor and enough energy to
last the day.
- Stand at the front of your
booth, near the aisle (but do not block traffic or your neighbor's
site-lines.) Sitting behind your table makes you look unapproachable.
- Be considerate of your
booth neighbors. Work within your space, keep sound minimal.
- Keep your booth clean.
Pick up trash and do not create trash.
- Have your booth manned at
all times and stay until the end of the expo.
